Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey heads south westward from Hobart taking the ferry to Bruny Island, where we explore its length and take a boat through the rugged coastline to its most southerly point. before returning to Hobart.
Today's Journey
From Hobart we head south westward to catch a ferry across the channel from Kettering to Bruny Island. |
After some distance travelling across Bruny Island, we stop at The Neck, a narrow sandbar linking the two halves of the island. We climb a high sand hill with this view back towards Hobart from the top. Turning around I look over the view of the very narrow neck looking south westward in the top photo. |
We explore the dunes along the boardwalk protecting the scrub where penguins burrow. |
From The Neck we head to the southern end of the island and catch a boat passing the spectacular cliffs along the coast. |
There are many rock formations and one big blow hole along this very rugged coastline capturing the big swell coming through from the Southern Ocean. |
Some of the hills have holes through them where the rough sea has worn through. |
Towering cliffs of dolerite form an inpenetrable barrier between land and sea. Here we see many seals in the pristine water. |
From the southernmost point of the island we head across to the large seal colony on The Friars, from where we see further along the coast to the southernmost point of Australia on the Tasmanian mainland. |
Returning to the island, we pass under some 280 metre high cliffs, almost as high as those near Tasman Island the other day. |
We return along the coast to Tasman Bay, from where we return along the island and take the ferry back to Hobart. |
