Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey departs Hobart heading back through the central lowlands to briefly stop at Launceston before catching another bus up to Devonport to where I catch the Spirit of Tasmania ferry back towards the mainland.
Today's Journey

Mount Wellington looms over the city as I depart Hobart heading northward towards the top of the island. |
A final view of the large harbour into which the Derwent River flows just before we cross it. |
The rugged countryside is dry from the relentless sun and wind in the driest time of year. It is mostly farmland with the occasional historic town. |
After several hours we reach historic Launceston where we briefly stop to swap buses. |
My second bus journey heads back out into the countryside towards Devonport. Mount Roland towers in the distance. |
Upon arriving in the Devonport city centre, I follow the path upstream along the Mersey River. |
About a kilometre upstream I cross the bridge over the river and head down the east bank towards the ferry terminal. |
The ferry arrives after its 12 hour journey across Bass Strait from Geelong. |
I climb on board at sunset watching the dusk over Devonport from the deck. |
The ship departs in the darkness, heading down the black river out into the open sea of Bass Strait. |
