Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey stays in Hoi An where I explore this historical village fortunately untouched by the Vietnam war. I spend much of the day shopping in the monsoonal rain conditions before going to a Vietnamese cooking class in the evening.

Today's Journey

One of the many channels of the Vinh Cua Dai River. The eye of Typhoon Ketsana passed over here and the flooding covered the road in almost 3 metres of water two weeks ago.

Despite the severe flooding, all the businesses have returned to normal and the tourists and shoppers are back.

Exploring the narrow streets of Hoi An discovering many very interesting shops.

The streets are busy, mostly with pedestrian traffic, but also with some cyclos and a few motorbikes.

A lot of the shop keepers wait outside their slightly musty shops for customers to enter.

Some rubble is left over from the flooding. Heavy rain begins falling again so now is a good time to do some shopping.

The river level almost touches the road. If the heavy rain continues the road will flood and nearby businesses will have to close again.

Shopping in a model ship shop - I buy one!

A large tailor business where I get a couple of suits made at a tiny fraction of the cost they would have been back home.

After an afternoon of shopping, I join a Vietmanese cooking class as heavy rain falls outside.
