Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me from the village on the Kinabatangan River into Sandakan, where we explore the historic town before heading out to the former concentration camp now an outdoors museum. From there we head back into the town going to a hilltop Buddhist temple and a nearby restaurant before returning to the city centre for the evening.
Today's Journey
View from our homestay looking to some of the houses in the village. Although this house across the road is fairly large, 32 people live in it. |
From the village, we take the road roughly following the river downstream towards Sandakan. |
We eventually reach the city where we explore passing author Agnes Newton Keith's house. |
Heading down the hill, I reach the centre of the city where the streets are full of market stalls. |
The apartment blocks in the central city are very dilapidated in the tropical weather. |
From our hotel we take a ride in a taxi with a fellow known as the main man in Sandakan. He has had passengers from all around the world by the looks of it. |
We stop at the Sandakan War Memorial, from where some 300 Australasian soldiers were marched across the top of the island to Ranau, under the shadow of Mount Kinabalu. Only six of these soldiers survived the march. |
The monument at the war memorial. Little remains of the World War II concentration camps that stood here, with much of the land now used as townhouse complexes. |
The Main Man from Sandakan takes us back near the city to where we visit a Buddhist Temple at the top of the cliff above the port. |
From the temple we head to a nearby fondue restaurant before going to a local karaoke bar. |
