Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me from the ecolodge back upstream to the village under the bridge, where we settle for the an overnight stay. We explore the local area including some graves stacked in some caves in a very steep hill.
Today's Journey
Fog covers the oxbow lake beside where we are staying. It gradually clears as the sun rises in the still air. The Kinabagangan River once flowed through here, but with its meanders changing, this section of river was cut off permanently to become a lake. |
The lake is almost perfectly reflected in the foliage on this damp morning. |
The fog quickly clears to a perfectly fine and hot day. |
Our guide takes us exploring the jungle. There are not a lot of animals here, but he talks about the plants which the indigenous people once ate to survive here. |
We return to the longboat and cruise back up the river to the village where we dock at at this small pontoon. |
From the village we head a few kilometres away from the river to a large limestone outcrop. |
Following a track up a steep track, we reach a couple of caves which are filled with the wooden coffins of the village chiefs who have died here over past centuries. The caves are a burial site. |
We return to the village beside the river where we settle into our homestays and relax over the afternoon. |
We do a cooking class in the village, preparing our own spectacular Bornean dinner. |
After the dinner, the locals entertain us with dances and performances. |
