Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes me from Poring to Ranau, from where we head across the island through jungle and palm plantations to a small village at the edge of the Kinabatangan River. From there we take a longboat downstream to an ecolodge. Once settled, we continue downstream exploring the river before returning to the ecolodge for a night walk in the jungle.

Today's Journey

Caption

We leave Poring in the early morning heading past Ranau and through the forested hills across the top of the island.

Crossing the Liwagu River as we follow it downstream towards the coast.

Some of the areas we pass through are thickly forested as the entire island of Borneo has always been until recent decades.

Much of the forest has in recent decades been cleared for the growing of palm trees for their palm oil. This industry has done severe damage to much of the jungles once covering the island and I make a note to avoid using products which use palm oil.

We eventually reach the Kinabatangan River where we stop at a village for lunch before taking a longboat downstream through the jungle.

We eventually land at a small pontoon at the end of a walking track through the jungle to this charming ecolodge where we are staying the night.

Once settled in the ecolodge, we return to the river and continue cruising downstream in the late afternoon to look for wildlife.

The river is calm as we follow it downstream finding lots of silver leaf monkeys and proboscis monkeys hidden in the tall trees.

As we return upstream to the ecolodge, the sun sets with brilliant colours in the clouds overhead.

It is dark by the time we get back to the pontoon. We explore the jungle in the darkness of night eventually returning to the ecolodge.
