Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes me from Turtle Island back to Sandakan, then further inland to the Sepilok Orangutan refuge. We return to a mangrove coast to a proboscis monkey sanctuary. We do an evening hike through the jungle.

Today's Journey

The sea is a bit rough as we leave Turtle Island in the morning and head back to Sandakan.

From Sandakan, we head inland about half way back to Kinabatangan reaching Sepilok where we reach our accommodation.

We head to the nearby Sepilok Orangutan Orphanage where young orangutans are rescued from the deforestation and brought here to give them a chance.

One of the orangutans makes a scene lying down on the walkway. They aim for minimal interaction between the orangutans and the humans as they will eventually be released back into the wild in protected reserves.

Another orangutan with an eye injury chews on a leaf as we walk past it on the boardwalk.

From the orangutan orphanage, we leave the forest passing more palm oil farms, lost orangutan habitat.

We reach the proboscis monkey sanctuary near the coast. Food is put out and a large group comes to feast.

From the sanctuary we explore some of the local forest along an elevated boardwalk as the sun goes down.

We return to our accommodation where our hosts prepare a very nice barbeque meal of local fish and veges.
