Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me along the shore of Lake Baikal in the early morning before returning to Irkutsk to catch the train heading westward along the Trans-Siberian route towards Moscow.
Today's Journey
A smoky morning in Listvyanka from bushfires burning over parts of Siberia. |
I return to the edge of Lake Baikal looking out over its crystal clear waters. |
One of several metal scultures along the waterfront. |
From Listvyanka I'm picked up and taken back through the silver birch forest following the Angara River downstream back to Irkutsk. |
With a couple of hours to spare, I return to the city centre and explore the Soviet war memorial, including the memorial to the unknown soldier. |
I return to Irkutsk Staton to catch the top train going from Chita (about a day's train ride from here towards Vladivostok) to Moscow. It is running 35 minutes late. All the times anywhere on the Russuan train network is in Moscow Time, five hours ahead of Irkutsk time. |
The Trans-Siberian train arrives ready for us to board. |
I settle into the little crowded cabin ready to start an 89 hour journey to Moscow. The windows are covered in black soot from the diesel engines so photographing the landscape is going to be a bit challenging. |
The train heads north westward following the Angara River downstream. |
It continues along the Siberian plains heading towards Krasnoyarsk as the sun sets and the sky outside darkens. |
