Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me through other parts of the historical city and through its subway up to the 60 degree line before heading to the shores of the Baltic Sea, completing my journey across Eurasia.
Today's Journey
Another very cold and windy morning greets me as I head across the Neva River to explore the Peter and Paul Fortress. |
Passing an old ship which has been converted into a restaurant and a few shops. |
Reaching the Peter and Paul fortress. Once a military fortification protecting the city from invaders, it is now a collection of museums of medieval torture and other strange things. |
Some of the original canons in the fortress. One cannon fires a very loud shot at midday each day. |
Returning across the river as storm clouds brew, I approach another glamorous cathedral crossing the Field of Mars and Mikhailovsky Park. |
Following another of the city's numerous canals as some of the trees show their autumn colours. |
Reaching the Church of our Saviour of the Blood. It was built between 1883 and 1907 on the site where Emperor Alexander III was fatally wounded in 1881. It was never consecrated but became a morgue during World War II then became a warehouse for vegetables. Restoration began in 1970 but it wasn't opened until 1997 as a museum. |
Catching the metro at Zvenigorodskaya Station to head to the northern side of the city. |
Coming up to the surface at the desolate Kommandanskiy Prospekt Station right on the 60 degree parallel - as far north as I've been at two thirds of the distance between the equator and the North Pole, about 3333 kilometres away. |
Heading back into the station, I head to the next station and hike through an industrial area to the 300th Anniversary Park, and onto the shore of the Baltic Ocean, watching the sunset having successfully crossed Eurasia from coast to coast. |
