Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes me into St Petersburg ending my long distance train journeys from Pyongyang. Once settled, I explore the St Petersburg city, the Peter and Paul Island, and some of the city's cathedrals.

Today's Journey

Passing under power lines in the early morning as we pass through more plains covered in silver birch forest heading towards St Petersburg.

Arriving in the very charming city of St Petersburg with its towering stone buildings rising from its narrow streets.

Exploring one of the many canals, in the Venice of the North. The strong wind is very cold today.

Brick buildings tower above the canals as I explore the city.

The entire city seems to be set along canals leading into the Baltic Sea in the North Atlantic Ocean.

The neoclassical Sobor Svyatoy Shivonachal'noy Russian Orthodox cathedral. It has sky blue domes with stars on them brightening the otherwise greyness of the overcast day.

I spot a car covered in artificial turf parked near one of the canals.

Passing the grand entrance of Kazan Cathedral. A small fountain stands at the focus of the concave of the cathedral's sweeping wings. It was built to model St Peter's Basilica in Rome and is now the main Russian Orthodox cathedral in St Petersburg.

Passing a fountain in front of the Admiralty building, the former headquarters of the Admiralty Board and the Imperial Russian Navy. It is now the headquarters of the Russian Navy.

The Yellow Piano sits quietly on one of the streets exposed to the elements.
