Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes me into the middle of Moscow where I go on a walking tour with my guide past the Kremlin, through Red Square, and along the Moscow River before returning to Red Square for the evening and from there catching a train to St Petersburg.

Today's Journey

I head into the spectacular Moscow Metro system into the city. The inner city stations are amazing.

Heading up to the surface, I pose in front of the KGB Headquarters - the orange building.

Exploring the beautiful Alexander Garden near Red Square. The flowers are still out with the weather being milder here than in Siberia.

The spectacular buildings of the Kremlin, Russia's government palace.

Following the Moskva River downstream, I explore the very natural Neskuchny Garden, an area of original forest still growing in the city with the autumn colours now starting to set in.

Returning upstream, I pass the famous Bolshoi Theatre, famous for its Russian opera.

Heading into Red Square, the GUM department store is brightly illuminated with its lights as the sun sets behind overcast skies.

The autumn harvest festival is going on outside Red Square, under the State Historical Museum.

Crossing Red Square towards St Basil's Cathedral as the sky darkens. Built in the 16th Century, it is actually seven churches under one spectacular roof.

From Red Square I head through the metro system to a train station from where I catch a train in the late evening on my final rail leg to St Petersburg.
