Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me from my home in Brisbane flying across the Tasman Sea arriving in Christchurch in the time before the big earthquakes.
Today's Journey
At Brisbane airport in the early morning ready to head across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand. |
Flying over the Gold Coast City as we head out over the ocean. The city sits on a sand bar, and behind it is the world's largest canal estate (even larger than Venice). |
Crossing high above the Tasman Sea. |
Crossing the South Island West Coast over Hokitika as we begin our descent into Christchurch on the other side of the island. |
Crossing above the two kilometre high mountains of the Southern Alps as we continue descending. |
Arriving at Christchurch Airport from where I head into the city. |
Most of the cloud has cleared as I settle in and explore Cathedral Square as it appears before the earthquakes. Here a couple of people play chess in front of the cathedral. |
I enter the cathedral as a choir is practicing. The gothic stonework seems indestructable. |
The Press (Christchurch's main newspaper) building behind the cathedral. |
Returning to my accommodation, I pass under the Bridge of Rememberance as the cloud closes in again and the temperature plummets. |
