Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes me from the shores of Te Anau crossing the lake into South Arm where we eventually make landfall and hike to the Hidden Lakes. We return to Te Anau and I later get another boat across to the Te Anau Caves.

Today's Journey

Rain clouds cover the mountains as the sun rises capturing a small rainbow in front of the Murchison Mountains. Rain is falling on the west coast, but it hasn't started falling here yet.

Walking into Te Anau passing the calm lake to catch a small boat (the one I saw yesterday at Brod Bay).

Cruising into South Fiord far below the track I followed on the last two days of the Kepler Track.

Stopping at a remote jetty, we hike through the forest to one of the hidden lakes I saw yesterday from the Kepler Track. Luxmore is on top of the distant ridge.

Returning to the boat which had been visited by a couple of kea but fortunately no damage has been done.

Returning to Te Anau. Although rain was forecast to fall here, only a few spots fall on this side of the mountains. I relax here for a couple of hours before returning to the port to catch another boat.

Heading out from Te Anau again, this time towards the end of the Murchison Mountains to explore the Te Anau Caves.

Passing Dome Islands at the entrance of South Fiord. The Murchison Mountains are in the background.

Reaching the jetty at the point at the end of the Murchison Mountains. This area is covered in limestone similar to what I had seen on the Kepler Track yesterday. From here we explore the dark glow worm caves fed by Tunnel Burn draining Lake Orbell, the remote lake where the takahe were rediscovered.

Returning to Te Anau at sunset as the clouds turn pink.
