Introduction to today's journey

Today's hike starts with a brief walk in freezing conditions to Luxmore Caves. From there I return to the hut to hike down the mountain to Brod Bay on the shores of Lake Te Anau. From here I take a boat across to Te Anau village.

Today's Journey

The sun rises to a still -6 degree morning. I head out for a short morning walk over the very frosty track.

About ten minutes from the hut is the Luxmore Cave, one of many cave systems in the limestone rock deposited on the sea floor here before the mountains of Fiordland were raised. A lot of limestone remains on the eastern slopes of Fiordland.

After exploring the cave, I return to the hut with the sun now shining bright and some of the frost starting to melt.

I pack up and follow the long tussock covered limestone ridge towards Te Anau.

The track enters the forest as it begins its long descent to the lake.

About a quarter of the way down, the track suddenly reaches a stairway descending a spectacular line of limestone bluffs. The track traverses the length of these bluffs in what would otherwise be very difficult terrain to navigate.

Once past the bluffs the track continues a moderate descent through the forest. It is in very good condition and progress is quick.

I reach the peaceful Brod Bay with its golden beach. A boat I will be cruising on tomorrow sits offshore.

After relaxing on the beach the water taxi arrives to take us across the two kilometres of lake back to Te Anau.
