Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey explores Riverton before heading into Invercargill, where I explore Queen's Gardens and the city centre.

Today's Journey

Heading a bit further around the coast in the morning, I reach Mores Scenic Reserve where I can see back towards Gemstone Beach. It is too cloudy to see Fiordland this morning.

Looking south, I have a clear view over the notorious Foveaux Strait to Stewart Island, New Zealand's third largest island containing some of New Zealand's remotest wilderness. This is where I'll be heading tomorrow.

From the same lookout looking east, is the small town of Riverton marking the start of Southland's fertile plains.

Exploring Riverton Beach. Riverton is the oldest community in Southland and one of the oldest in New Zealand settled as a fishing town in 1830.

From Riverton, we head eastward 30 kilometres to Invercargill, New Zealand's southernmost city where I'll be staying overnight.

The sun has cleared to a perfect day (24 degrees which is a heatwave for these latitudes). I explore Queens Park heading through the rose garden.

Exploring the ponds at Queens Park. The weather has cleared to a perfect 24 degree day - a heatwave for this normally cold and windy town.

A statue of Bert Munro who put the area on the map with the World's Fastest Indian movie from a under 1000cc motorcycle world record of 306km/h he set in 1967 and has never been broken since.

Exploring the quiet Invercargill City Centre and stocking up on supplies ready for Stewart Island.

It is 10:00 in the evening and the sky is still partially light in the city centre. The days are very long in summer and very short in winter.
