Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me from Anchorage to the end of the track at Marahau, with a quick stop at the beautiful Watering Cove. Once I reach the end of the track, I head over the Marahau Hill to Motueka.
Today's Journey
After some overnight rain, I head from Anchorage camping ground across a low saddle to Te Pukatea Bay in the early morning. |
I return to Anchorage and follow the placid shore to the far end of the beach to explore a small glowworm cave. |
Returning to the camping ground, I pack up the tent and set off on the final hike of this trek back towards civilisation. |
Crossing a steep hill, I reach Watering Cove in the sheltered Astrolabe Roadstead. |
From Watering Cove, I have to head back up into the hills hiking for a good hour before the track descendings reaching the sea at Yellow Point viewed here. From the point the trail follows above the pristine Stilwell Bay. |
Stopping at the Appletree Bay camping ground looking across the sheltered waters to Adele Island. |
From Appletree Bay, I head around Guilbert Point crossing above Coquille Bay with Fisherman Island in the distance. |
From Coquille Bay the turquoise sea gives way to sand and swampy flats. The track continues following the hillside before crossing a raised boardwalk across the swamp to the track's end here at Marahau. |
From Marahau I head over the hill to Riwaka before crossing over the Motueka River which I will be exploring upstream over the next two days. |
Arriving in Motueka in the early evening. |
