Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes us back over the top of Adelaide Island crossing over the Antarctic Circle heading past the Biscoe Islands. We pass between Renaud and Laviosier Islands heading back towards the peninsula mainland stopping in the icy waters of Fish Islands. There a group of us go on a photography workshop on one of the Zodiacs for a couple of hours before we head back out and continue northward passing the north eastern side of Renaud Island.
Today's Journey
Sunrise as we cross the Antarctic Circle heading northward off Adelaide Island towards Fish Islands. |
An impressively large iceberg, broken off the continental shelf and dragged around the continent by the world's strongest current circling Antarctica to become stuck here near the Antarctic Peninsula. |
Passing more huge icebergs later in the morning as we pass some large ice domes covering the Biscoe Islands. |
Jagged mountains on the Antarctic Peninsula as we reach Fish Islands and enter a thick ice field. |
The icebergs around the islands are amazing. Many of these are large ice sheets covered in huge ice boulders rolled down from the glaciers. |
We anchor off the islands and I join a photography workshop cruise on one of the zodiacs. Passing some car sized ice blocks on a large iceberg. The overcast conditions are perfect for bringing out the blues in the ice. |
A couple of seals at play on a flat block of sea ice. |
Passing some more spectacular icebergs as we wind our way through the huge maze in perfectly calm waters. |
Heading back to the ship we have to cut our way through a layer of new sea ice but we successfully make it through and reach the ship. |
Departing the Fish Islands as more cloud settles over the mountains. From here we head west going offshore before turning north to continue along the peninsula. The weather has mostly cleared along the top half of the peninsula now and it is starting to deteriorate further south where we were yesterday. |
