Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes us into the spectacular Lemaire Channel avoiding the huge icebergs heading to Petermann Island where we explore the area by kayak before landing at a large penguin colony on the island. Later in the day we head over to Port Charcot to explore the icebergs by zodiac. After a full day of exploring, we head back out through the precarious Lemaire Channel under a spectacular sunset.

Today's Journey

Entering Lemaire Channel in the early morning. Thick clouds cover the mountaintops and huge flakes of snow fall out of the misty air. Somehow our ship will navigate through this very narrow channel full of icebergs.

We eventually see the end of the channel and negotiate our way around these remaining icebergs for a successful passage which had earlier seemed unlikely.

Once anchored, we head out kayaking again before landing at Petermann Island in a large gentoo penguin colony.

Heading out from Petermann Island, we nagivate through the icebergs passing more spectacular mountains.

The black water is full of these amazing blue icebergs.

Landing at Port Charcot, we hike up the hill for these spectacular views above the penguin colony.

Once back in the zodiacs, we cruise amongst the spectacular icebergs.

We cruise out to beyond the bay with views further up the dramatic mountains which we will soon cruise through again.

Heading back into the Lemaire Channel, the sun suddenly comes out just before setting, adding spectacular colour to the normally blue and white Antarctic.

Heading out the end of Lemaire Channel, we pass these spectacularly steep mountains as we continue northward along the peninsula. The last mountain (Una's Tits) has only been summited once in 1991. Most other mountains here have never been climbed.
