Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me off the ship I cruised through Antarctica. I explore the historical foreshore of the world's southernmost major port before doing a short cruise around some of the islands offshore in Ushuaia Bay. Upon returning, I head up to a hotel above the city below the Martial Range.
Today's Journey
Following an early breakfast, we collect our passports and depart the ship, stepping foot back on Tierra del Fuego, South America's largest offshore island. |
After storing my bag, I explore Ushuaia's foreshore. Here I pass some colourful buildings beside the port. |
I catch a small boat heading back out into the Beagle Channel. |
We reach some rocky islands to the south west of the city. |
We land on the island, looking back out along the Beagle Channel as stormy clouds pass overhead. From here we head inland along this small island covered in tundra heath. |
The rocky islands looking back towards the city. A kilometre deep glacier once covered the channel but these hard rocks resisted the erosion which had otherwise completely carved out the channel right across from coast to coast separating the lower islands of Cape Horn from Tierra del Fuego. |
From the island we cruise back towards the middle of the channel and pass this lighthouse atop another hard rock. A large colony of gannets occupies this exposed island. |
Returning to Ushuaia, spectacular lenticular clouds form over the channel indicating a change in weather. In this case the storm covering much of the Drake Passage is beginning to clear. We only got the very northern tip of the storm. |
Returning to Ushuaia, I pick up my bag and get a taxi up the hill to this spectacular hotel. |
View over Ushuaia and down the Beagle Channel from the hotel in the evening as I have dinner. |
