Introduction to today's journey
Today we have a day off travelling staying at the Futaleufu River in this obscure corner of Patagonia. Here I relax beside the river watching the occasional raft coming down the grade four rapids.
Today's Journey
The sun rises over the towering peaks on this still morning, a day when we take a break from travelling. |
I explore the main road, a gravel road passing through the spectacular mountains. This is a little explored area of the Andes. |
Farmlands covers the tiny clearings on the terraces between the river and the mountains. |
I head down to the river, where a kayaker paddles down this grade 6 rapid. |
A group of rafters come down the same rapid a bit later. |
Returning to Cara del Indioa farm where I'm staying looking along the road where we will continue travelling tomorrow upstream. |
Heading back to the river beside the farm. The smooth boulders are over a metre in diameter and the river very swift. The water is crystal clear but would be very dramatic when flooding. |
At the end of the boulders I reach another thundering rapid. |
The chalet cabin where I'm staying up the hill above the thundering river. The Patagonians build amazing solid cabins here in the mountains. |
A fisheye view of the cabin from my bunk on the top floor looking down into the lounge. A fire is going and is maintained throughout the night by our hosts. |
