Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me from Miami City southward to the Florida Keys, before following the highway along them eventually reaching Key West. From there I take a boat trip out into the Carribean before returning to the island discovering its history and reaching the southernmost point of the United States mainland.
Today's Journey
Early morning in Miami just before heading southward towards the bottom of Florida. |
Passing the swamplands of the everglades, forming much of Florida. |
Reaching the Florida Keys, a series of islands just south of mainland Florida joined by a highway. |
Between each island is mangroves and sea water shallow enough to wade through at low tide. Here we come into view of Key West, the largest and most distant of the islands. |
Taking a boat tour west of Key West over some Caribbean reefs in a glass bottomed boat. |
Returning to Key West, I explore some of the museums in the historical town centre. |
Some of the houses here have a lot of character. Key West has attracted a lot of artistic people over recent centuries. |
Reaching the southernmost point of Continental USA on the south side of the island. Cuba is just 150km behind me. |
Exploring the streets of Key West in the afternoon. |
Returning over the Keys towards Miami. The remains of the original highway linking the islands is crumbling into the ocean. |
