Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey starts with a tour out west exploring the everglades before returning to Miami and spending the early afternoon exploring the city over the afternoon and evening. From there I catch an evening bus a couple of hours northward to Orlando.

Today's Journey

Early morning exploring the Miami waterfront before heading westward for about an hour to the everglades.

Swamp buggies which we ride on out in the everglades.

An alligator just visible to the right in the still water. There are many lurking in the waters here but most are hiding from the hot sun.

Exploring the swampy everglade, which is the slowest flowing river in the world running from Lake Okeechobee southward about 160 kilometres towards Key West at about a metre per hour. Water draining from the lake finally reaches the sea after 18 years.

Following a channel through the everglades. Most of the water is about knee deep, but perhaps a little deeper in this channel.

Returning to the base, we see several alligators resting. There are many thousands of these living in the shallow water of the everglade.

Returning to Miami almost right next to the everglade. The city sits on a layer of limestone only a couple of metres higher than the limestone under the everglade.

I catch one of the little trains exploring the city centre.

After exploring the city centre, I head to the main railway station to catch the New York overnight train northwards to Washington D.C.

The train arrives in Orlando a little after sunset as an evening storm looms.
