Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me by train through Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina where a hurricane has recently passed through. I arrive in Washington D.C. in the late afternoon and quickly explore the city centre and discover the White House just before sunset.
Today's Journey
After travelling by train overnight through northern Florida and Georgia, the sun rises over South Carolina. |
Passing through one of many small towns in South Carolina. |
A cotton field - these are very common throughout south eastern USA. |
Hurricane Florence came through here about a week ago and the main rivers in North Carolina are still in flood. Fortunately the railway is open along the entire east coast so there are no delays. |
Crossing the Occoquan River in Virginia. Much of the area south of Washington D.C. is covered in large rivers and estuaries surrounded by forest. |
Heading through the suburbs of Washington D.C. before reaching Union Station in the city centre. |
Once settled into my accommodation, I explore the city centre where I see plenty of protesters including some who are camped out. |
The US treasury building on Pennsylvania Avenue near the White House. |
After passing the White House, I spot the Washington Memorial towering above the surrounding parkland. |
With the day quickly drawing to a close, I return to the central city. |
