Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me from Lihue heading around the east coast of Hawaii's garden island. Many movies have been filmed here, so I join a movie tour where we head to all sorts of sites made famous by movies. We eventually reach Princetown, as far around the island as we can get before heading back to Lihue.
Today's Journey
The old Ahukini Pier in Hanamaulu Bay just north of Lihue. |
From the wharf we head inland to the Wailua Falls, which appears in many movies. |
Returning to Hanamaulu Beach before continuing northward. |
Stopping at the deteriorating Coco Palms Resort abandoned since being damaged in Hurricane Iniki in 1992. In its day it was a famous resort frequented by Elvis Presley and where numerous movies were filmed. |
We head back inland into the mountains to Uluwehi Falls on the Lower Wailua River. |
Passing the cafe used in the Dennis Nedry scene in the first Jurassic Park movie in Kapaa. |
View of Kalalea Mountain, famous for being King Kong's profile, and also used in the opening scene of the first Indiana Jones movie. |
Returning to the coast where we explore Moloa'a Beach filmed in the Gilligan's Island pilot episodes. |
View of the Kilauea Lighthouse at the northernmost point of the Hawaiian archepelego, and also the northernmost point of Polynesia. |
Returning towards Lihue, we pass Jurassic Hahili Ranch, the cattle farm where the first Jurassic Park movie was mostly filmed. The farm can still be rented out for movies, at around $US100,000 per day. |
