PrologueWHAT distinguishes humans from the apes? Only yesterday I had explored Nairobi's natural history museum which arguably contains the most extensive collection of early human fossils dating back millions of years. One thing almost all the fossils had in common was the fact they came from the Rift Valley, where somehow the environment allowed them to evolve above the apes to become the unique creatures that we are. By travelling to Masai Mara in the heart of Africa's Rift Valley, I was hoping to find some answers in the area where humanity first came into being and lived for millions of years. It is only in the last fifty thousand years that people have dispersed around the world and only in the past couple of hundred years that we have been able to readily travel at will. I live half a world away in Australia, almost at the antipodes of this area. Whilst travelling through East Africa, I needed to come to this amazing place where my ancestors lived tens of thousands of generations ago.
