Introduction to today's journey
THE NOISY chinstrap penguins of the northern Antarctic Peninsula are rapidly decreasing in population due to climate change. Although the weather here is dreadfully cold even now at the warmest part of the year, this area has been affected more than most other parts of the world with the temperature rising over five degrees in the past fifty years. This has apparently affected the food supplies of krill, which has impacted on all the animals that feed on them including these penguins. Although the circumpolar climate isolates Antarctica from the rest of the world, even this pristine environment is becoming impacted by human activity.
Today's journey starts heads into Wilhelmia Bay where we kayak to a shipwreck near Enterprise Island. From there we head to Palaver Point where we do our final landing. After the landing, we do a Zodiac cruise amongst humpback whales as the weather finally turns after near perfect conditions along the entire peninsula. We return to the ship and depart the peninsula towards the South Shetland Islands.
