THE ANTARCTIC Peninsula is the northernmost and most mountainous part of the continent, stretching out into the Drake Passage. Its relative ease of access and numerous harbours has given rise to numerous whaling and research bases set up by Argentina, Chile and the United Kingdom, which all share sovereign rights to this remote corner of the world. Fortunately the whaling has long finished with the old bases still perfectly preserved. Modern bases are now purely used for scientific research.
This journey continues southward to Red Rock Ridge under Adelaide Island where I first set foot on mainland Antarctica. From there we head northward along the Antarctic Peninsula making stops at Stonington Island, Fish Islands, Lemaire Channel, Peterman Island, Cuverville Point, Neko Harbour, Paradise Harbour, Wilhelmia Bay and Palavar Point. |
