Introduction to today's journey
THE FLORIDA Keys is a row of islands extending south of the southern end of Florida, encasing shallow waters covering plains flooded at the end of the last ice age. This forms the start of the huge flooded plain of the Carribean. These islands are linked by a highway between Miami and Key West, allowing easy access to this southernmost extreme of mainland United States of America. Here the climate is tropical, with Key West being the only part of mainland United States to never experience frosts.
Today's journey takes me from Miami heading southwestward to the keys, crossing all the islands until eventually reaching Key West. From there I take a glass bottomed boat out over the shallow water looking for fish. I return to Key West and explore the city in a trolleybus, discovering a lot of the history of this subtropical city. I also reach the southernmost point of mainland United States before returning to Miami.
