PrologueSOME years ago whilst still living in New Zealand I had been travelling through Invercargill, New Zealand’s southernmost city. In the centre of the city I saw a large group of Hare Krishnas. They had been travelling around the world on some pilgrimage no doubt raising awareness of their cause. Here they were celebrating having reached the furthest end of the earth. In their minds there was nothing beyond here. This was as far as it gets from the bright centre of the Earth. I quietly celebrated with them. Although this was just part of my home country, I knew there really wasn’t much beyond here. This was as remote as anywhere gets. Invercargill is the closest city to the magnetic south pole and the last main port of call before Antarctica. I knew though there were pockets of civilisation beyond Invercargill, and on this trip years later I was about to explore as far as it gets, the closest permanent settlement to the Magnetic South Pole on an offshore island. I was going to beyond the end of the world...
