OBAN is the only settlement in Stewart Island at the bottom of New Zealand.

This very quiet harbour in what is otherwise some of the roughest sea in the world is placid enough to house a permanent port thanks to some offshore islands providing shelter. Oban has a small permanent population in the otherwise uninhabited remote Stewart Island. It is the closest town to the South Magnetic Pole.

Surrounded by frigid Antarctic water, it is rich in seafood. Before tourism Oban was a fishing village. Now it primarily supports the conservation and the small tourism industry here, though only the tough venture here as much of the island is accessible only by difficult walking track. In fact most of the island is not accessible at all.
