HAVING arrived in Stewart Island yesterday, I spent the day taking a tour to Ulva Island, a protected bird sanctuary in the middle of Patterson Inlet. A trail led around the otherwise completely untouched island.
Here I saw many species of plant and animal that have become extinct many years ago in New Zealand's main islands, making this island a bit of a lost world paradise.
I spent the afternoon with my tour guide and a few other hardy adventurers exploring the southern end of the island, where few people venture. We followed a rough trail along the ridge until eventually reaching a small inlet called The Snuggery.
