THE MARANGU Hotel sits part way up the south eastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the starting point for many travellers who come from all around the world on their pilgrimage up Africa's highest mountain. The fertile volcanic soils have contributed to the hotel having spectacular gardens with bright flowers and lush plants in stark contrast to the barren alpine desert higher on the mountain. Here travellers rest just before starting the climb, and again they relax upon their return from the mountain. I had just returned from five days on the mountain on this day, so it was nice to relax amongst the spectacular gardens as I rested my sore muscles. Trek from today: |
