COMPLETED only last year, the James Mackay Hut was the most luxurious share accommodation I have ever stayed in. The Heaphy, James Mackay and Perry Saddle huts had all in recent years been rebuilt to a standard that is a far cry from the typical New Zealand backcountry hut. After a 700 metre climb along a ridge from the Heaphy River, I was rewarded with the comfort of this hut. With only three other travellers staying here tonight we had an entire bunkroom each.
