FROM the Gouland Downs Hut heading up towards Perry Saddle on another frosty morning a large wooden pole sits in one of the track corners. Over the years people have hung old boots on this pole, eventually giving this place the name “Boot Pole Corner”.
How these boots ended up here I could only imagine. This was a remote part of the track, so it wasn’t as if people just came in from one end to do a day walk up to here and dropped them off. Perhaps these people knew of this place and lugged their old retired boots to this pole to hang, meaning they would have to carry the extra weight all the way here.
