CONTINUING down the Whanganui River from our first campsite at Maharanui, we followed under overcast skies into densely forested hills with cliffs rising on either side of the river adding to the remoteness as we ventured deep into the national park.
We made a stop in the morning at a rocky beach opposite the Haukopai Cave, believed by the local Maori people to have been visited by the taniwha - a legendary monster that lurks in the depths of the river.
