TONIGHT I was very fortunate in seeing the International Space Station fly directly over Brisbane at 5:20PM, just fifteen minutes after sunset when the sky was already going dark, yet the sun was still shining brightly on the station, creating perfect conditions for seeing it.

Travelling at 27,600 kilometres per hour, its 400 kilometre altitude meant it was sweeping quite slowly across the sky from south west to north east. Five people are currently on the station (the only people in outer space at the moment), on the fiftieth expedition since it became operational over 18 years ago. They are truly an international crew, coming from USA, Russia, and France.

Perhaps they were looking down at the spectacular sunset over the east coast of Australia and seeing the small constellation of lights coming on over Brisbane.

From where I stood it was just a tiny white dot crawling across the sky. For dramatic effect this is a composite shot of a long exposure trail and a fast frame shot of the station.
