MORETON Island is almost entirely sand. The only exception is the far north eastern corner of the island which is the remains of a small extinct volcano.
Heading across a low pass from the camping ground at first light, I arrived in Honeymoon Bay in what would have once been inside the crater. The lights of the Cape Moreton Lighthouse and the much smaller north point light were still going as the sky ahead lightened, leading the way for the dramatic sunrise.
Following the sunrise, I returned to the camp, packed up and headed over the back of the cape to the start of the 38 kilometre eastern beach which I followed for a few hours down to Blue Lagoon.
