A COLD southerly with thick cloud and rain hid most of the spectacular mountains from view. I headed across to Arrowtown, a historic gold mining town. Most of the buildings still retained the Victorian era charm.
Spending much of the morning in the museum steeped with history, countless artefacts told the story of the discovery of gold. This attracted many people from all around the world to settle here in New Zealand's harsh mountain climate to dig for their fortunes.
Below the main town was a Chinese settlement, with tiny stone thatched huts built onto the river flats and set into the steep bluffs. Despite the passing of over a century, some of these huts remain intact along the river walkway.
