UNDER overcast conditions I took a small bus up along the side of Lake Wakatipu from Queenstown, with a brief stop at Glenorchy before heading across the Dart Valley passing the scene of Isengard in Lord of the Rings, before following a forested valley to the start of the Routeburn Track.

Starting from the Routeburn Shelter, the track briefly descended to cross the Route Burn, the river I'll be following upstream towards the main divide. From there the track followed the spectacular Route Burn Gorge for several kilometres as the weather cleared to bright blue skies before I reached Routeburn Flats.

With the intention of staying at all four huts along the track, I stayed at Routeburn Flats Hut for the night, spending the afternoon exploring the tussock flats above the gorge under spectacular snow-capped mountains.
