A COLD southerly front came over as I began the hike up the Camp Street track from the calm grey waters of the Otago Harbour up the extinct volcano. Although only a walking track through farmland now, it was once the track where all the building materials were sent up to the top of the hill to construct New Zealand's only castle.

Thick cloud enveloped the castle as I entered and explored its 43 opulent rooms and its spectacular grounds before I returned down the hill to the port and back into the city to explore some more museums and the art gallery.

The moderate cold rain and wind blowing from the Antarctic made this a museum day, uncovering Dunedin's history as the support city for the Otago gold rush of the 1880s.
