LEAVING Dunedin around sunrise, I travelled northward towards Ashburton on a bus trip which I had been fortunate to purchase for only a dollar.
This was a good day to be inside a warm bus, sheltered from the very cold drizzle falling outside, with snow apparently falling to 1300 metres on the mountains hidden from view.
A little north of Dunedin, the road followed the turbulent Southern Ocean for a few kilometres. It was hardly a day to be going to the beach.
