HEADING inland from Ashburton into the Rangitata River, we headed towards a small hill in the middle of the valley between the ranges of snow capped mountains. The solid rock hill resisted the erosion of the massive glaicer that had once flowed down the valley from the backbone of the Southern Alps.
A track led from the gravel road across the tussock farmland of the Mount Potts Station crossing a couple of streams towards Mount Sunday, made famous as the film location of Edoras, the town where King Theoden ruled Rohan from. The throne hall had been constructed on the summit and the town constructed along the ridge to its left.
In the years since Lord of the Rings, the town has been abandoned back into tussock farmland with the only signs of civilisation left being the rough track worn by Middle Earth pilgrims such as myself, and the worn flag of Rohan erected on the trig station at the hill's summit.
