SETTING off from Point Lookout in the darkness of the early morning, I headed towards one of the camping grounds two thirds of the way down the 38 kilometre long beach. Unlike the other islands the beach campsites don't have any facilities, so I needed to carry enough water for three days.
The sky lightened and the sun eventually slipped over the north eastern horizon. Being only a week out from the winter solstice would ensure it would stay behind me all day as I headed down the beach past countless sand dunes and little bays in the sand carved by the pristine blue ocean waves nibbling away at the shore, creating low sand cliffs along 90% of the length of the beach.
