HEADING north from Brisbane towards Rainbow Beach from where I will start the Cooloola Great Walk tomorrow, I briefly stopped at the inc0nspicuous village of Kybong 160km north of the city.

The shops stood above a small lake, next to which was the 13 metre tall Matilda kangaroo, the mascot used in the opening ceremony of the 1982 Commonweath Games in Brisbane.

Having been sold to a Gold Coast theme park shortly after the games, it was sold 20 years later to the Matilda Fuel Supplies here. The petrol station has closed now, but the mascot still remains here above its picturesque lake.
