Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes me across the Ural Mountains overnight into Europe getting closer to Moscow.

Today's Journey

Caption

I awaken as we pass a station. We have crossed the very low Ural Mountains overnight separating the Asian continent from Europe. I'm now officially in Europe.

Another passenger train heading across the epic Trans-Siberian route towards Vladivostok.

The trees and grass is a lot greener here in this damp environment now we are getting closer to the Atlantic Ocean.

Another train stop at Kirov, the northernmost part of the railway line at 58.5 degrees latitude. Here a station worker's dog faithfully waits for him to return.

One of many railway crossings we pass. Note the large steel plates which rise as the boom gates go down. There is no way to run a railway crossing.

A novel little stop at a train station. Perhaps they have more of a sense of humour on this side of Russia.

Passing another little town with very small houses.

The forest surrounds a small lake.

Golden hour over the golden silver birch trees as the sun prepares to set, about 4 hours later than it did on the day we left Irkutsk having travelled nearly 60 degrees longitude since departing.

The last light of the day through layers of cloud.
