Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me from Nairobi descending into the rift valley where we cross towards the plains of Masai Mara to a small traditional village and eco camp at Ulurak.
Today's Journey
Heading out of Nairobi along a bumpy road as the sun finally comes out. |
We reach the edge of the rift valley, where two continents are splitting apart to eventually create a new ocean in the aeons ahead. It was in this valley where apes evolved into humans. |
A row of market stalls line the edge of the rift valley near the lookout. |
Once down the side of the rift valley, we cross the hilly terrain along its bottom. |
After a long journey across the plains, we stop at an eco resort where I will be staying for two nights. Here we explore the plains finding a monkey in one of the acacia trees. |
An old flood channel passing through the acacia trees, all that is left of a huge rainforest once covering the plains before the climate changed a couple of million years ago. |
A dust devil twirls in front of some nearby hills. |
We reach a traditional Maasai village with its huts built of sticks and insulated with cattle dung. |
My Maasai guide in his very bright clothes. They all dress like this perhaps to display their dominance amongst the wildlife here. There are no fences to keep away the large animals, including the lions and hyenas. |
Returning to the eco camp with my tent in the foreground. It is strong enough to keep out the wildlife passing through here each night. |
