Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes me from our base walking up a rough road passing through several small villages until eventually reaching a pygmy village right at the edge of the Congo.

Today's Journey

Exploring the village of Rubigiri near the ecolodge. We start from here exploring the long valley in between the mountains.

A small doll created by one of the locals made from a plastic bag and some vegetation.

Local children waving to us as we pass their houses heading further up the valley.

The land becomes more wild as we pass increasingly remote farms in the remote mountains.

More children sitting in the grass on the steep bank watching us pass as we continue hiking the narrow trail up the valley.

We eventually reach a pygmy village where the villagers live in these tiny thatched huts. Once forest dwellers, they have been kicked out of the jungle and forced to live at the edge of the clear land. The women and children live here, but their men are scattered around Uganda working to bring money back to their families.

We are at the very edge of the Congo, the second largest rainforest in the world. This is as far as the rainforest has been cleared, and will no doubt continue to be cleared over the years. Fortunately the high slopes are protected as it is gorilla habitat.

From the pygmy village we start following the long trail back into Rubigiri where we meet a blacksmith forging a small sickle.

Returning to the ecolodge, one of our hosts disovers and shows us a chameleon.
