Introduction to today's journey

TODAY'S journey starts at Beerburrum Village with an early morning climb of the nearby Mount Beerburrum. Returning from the summit I follow the Yul Yan-Man Track around the mountain and along the top of the Trachyte Range until it ends on the Trachyte Circuit. From here I head up to nearby Jack Ferris Lookout, then across the valley to climb the summit of Mount Tiberoowuccum. Descending the other side, I head across to Mount Tibrogargan where I follow the circuit around its base before following the trails into Glasshouse Mountains Village.

Distance hiked today: 18.7km

Total distance hiked: 260.7km

Today's Journey

Caption

I start the morning at sunrise at the Mount Beerburrum trailhead, passing the landscaped day use area before diverting along a temporary trail thanks to the main one being washed out a bit further ahead.

I return to the main trail and follow the steep concrete path up to the fire lookout tower at its summit. From there I see the other strange peaks of the Glasshouse Mountains, all remnant volcanic plugs remaining after their volcanic cones and the surrounding sandstone has eroded away in the 22 million years following the eruptions.

After resting at the summit I follow the steep sealed track back down the mountain to the old trailhead from where I start following the Yul Yan Man track.

Caption

This track is very rough requiring a bit of scrambling as it negotiates its way around the steep side of Mount Beerburrum before moderating following the top of the Trachyte Range followed by a steep descent to the much better formed Trachyte Circuit.

Caption

Following the circuit clockwise, I reach Jack Ferris Lookout giving great views across the Glasshouse Mountains. Nearby is Mount Tiberoowuccum which I will shortly be climbing. In the distance is Mount Ngungun which I will be climbing tomorrow morning.

Caption

I continue following the trail before turning off along a firebreak leading to the moderately steep track up to the top of Tiberoowuccum.

Caption

The climb is fairly easy apart from a steep scramble at the end. From near the 220 metre high summit I see the towering Mount Tibrogargan with its steep summit track carved through the scrub.

Caption

After descending the other side of Mount Tiberoowuccum, I head across to the Tibrogargan Circuit which heads around the base of the mountain.

Caption

The circuit reaches a viewpoint on the other side of the mountain where vertical cliffs tower hundreds of meters overhead to about the level the ground was when these mountains erupted. These rock faces are popular with climbers who I can hear in the distance as they climb the rock faces.

Caption

I leave the Tibrogargan Circuit and follow a back road to a good trail following Steve Irwin Drive for a couple of kilometres before I reach Glasshouse Mountains village a little after sunset. Here I stay the night.
