Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me up to Philidelphia where I explore the historical old quarter where the United States of Amercia was founded and the Declaration of Independence was signed. I then head inland to where I visit an Amish community before heading to the big smoke of New York.
Today's Journey
Heading out of Lancaster very early in the morning, we head further into Pennsylvania to a little town called Intercourse, one of the main Amish areas. Here we explore one of the Amish farms. |
Returning to Intercourse, we stop at an Amish market browsing their traditional wares. |
We head back to the coast reaching Philidelphia. Here we explore a museum containing the Liberty Bell. |
Nearby we head into the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall. This was the room where the US declaration of independence was written and signed on 4 July 1776. |
Statues at the site of Benjamin Franklin's house. He was an inventor and also a founding father during the declaration of independence. |
Exploring the hidden Elfreth's Alley built between 1703 and 1836. This very narrow street has retained its original character as the rest of the city has modernised. |
Exploring the Betsy Ross House, where the first American Flag (with its circle of stars) was made. |
Heading across the city, we reach the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, made famous in the Rocky movies. People are running up and down the stairs mimicing Rocky Balboa's exercise regime. |
Looking across the very modern city centre from the top of the stairs. |
Leaving Philidelphia, we follow the main highway continuing northward along the coast. It is almost dark when I spot the towering skyline of Manhattan Island, where I will be based for the next few days. |
