Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes me through central Manhattan discovering all many historical buildings in amongst the giant glass towers. I go as far as East River where the United Nations Building stands. From there I head back across following Fifth Avenue through more of Mahattan down to the Flatiron Building, then back up to the Empire State Building from where I watch the sunset.
Today's Journey
Heading to East River in the early morning, I follow an old wharf at East River Esplanade towards the United Nations building. |
Inside Grand Central Station, where all the commuters come into the city from outlying suburbs. |
The crazy flashing lights of Times Square viewed from the top of a double decker bus as we head through Manhattan. |
Reaching the famous Flat Iron Building. |
At the base of the Empire State Building. |
Reaching the museum at the 80th level of the Empire State Building. It was originally built to hold the airships arriving from across the Atlantic Ocean. |
View to Lower Manhattan from the 86th floor observatory where the passengers from the airships would have boarded from. |
I take another lift up to the top floor observatory on the 102nd floor 373 metres above the streets below. From here I'm looking northwards towards Central Park with the big lake and parts of the forest visible. |
The sun sets over the Hudson River and New Jersey. Sunset here on the building is about eight minutes later than at street level. |
The lights of Lower Manhattan and Jersey City shine brightly as the sky darkens. |
